Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 28, 2024
1. Who We Are
BiuWrite is a local-first, AI-assisted writing studio created to help fiction writers move from idea to polished manuscript without sacrificing privacy. We operate out of the United States and can be reached at hello@biuwrite.com.
2. Information We Collect
Account and waitlist details
When you join the waitlist, create an account, or purchase a license we collect the information you share with us, which may include your name, email address, password (stored using industry-standard hashing), billing country, and the plan you selected.
Optional AI provider credentials
BiuWrite lets you connect your own API keys for services like OpenAI or Anthropic. Those keys are stored locally on your device by default. If you choose to sync them to our cloud backup (an opt-in beta feature), they are encrypted at rest and in transit.
Support conversations
When you email us or open a support ticket we keep the correspondence, attachments, and notes needed to diagnose issues and respond to you.
Website analytics
We use lightweight, privacy-friendly analytics to understand how visitors find our marketing site. These tools capture aggregated metrics such as page views, referring URLs, and approximate region; they do not build advertising profiles or store identifying cookies.
Your manuscripts
Drafts, notes, and worldbuilding materials you create inside the app stay on your device unless you explicitly export or share them. We do not see or process the contents of your writing by default.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide access to the BiuWrite application and core features
- Maintain your account, deliver license keys, and process transactions
- Send release announcements, onboarding tips, and service notices
- Respond to questions, bug reports, or feature requests
- Improve the reliability, performance, and safety of the product
- Comply with legal, accounting, and tax obligations
4. Local Processing & Connectivity
BiuWrite is designed to work offline. AI drafting, story-bible features, and revision tools operate locally when you use on-device models. If you connect a cloud AI provider, the prompts and context you send to that provider leave your device only for that API call and are subject to the provider's own privacy policy. You choose which models to invoke and can clear or rotate keys at any time.
5. Sharing & Third Parties
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only when:
- Working with payment processors to complete a purchase
- Operating optional services such as encrypted cloud backup or email delivery
- Required by law, court order, or to protect our legal rights
- You ask us to share data or integrate with a third-party tool
Each vendor we use agrees to appropriate confidentiality and security obligations.
6. Data Retention
We keep account, transaction, and support records for as long as you have an active relationship with us and for the period required by applicable law. Marketing waitlist entries are removed if you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Locally stored manuscripts remain solely under your control.
7. Security
We use industry-standard encryption for data in transit, enforce least-privilege access to operational systems, and regularly review dependencies for vulnerabilities. No online service is entirely risk free, so we encourage you to keep your devices updated and protect your account with a strong, unique password.
8. Your Choices & Rights
You can update most account details from within the app. To request access to, correct, export, or delete personal data that we store on our servers, email hello@biuwrite.com. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local laws (including GDPR or CCPA).
You may opt out of marketing emails by using the unsubscribe link in any message or by contacting us.
9. Children's Privacy
BiuWrite is built for adult and young-adult authors. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under the age required by your jurisdiction). If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can delete it.
10. Changes & Contact
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect new features, vendors, or legal requirements. When we make material changes we will update the date at the top of this page and, when practical, notify you by email or in-app notice.
